Yayoi Kusama’s yellow tentacles fill a mirrored room at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, multiplying in every direction. The installation is a centrepiece of a retrospective spanning more than seventy years, with paintings, sculpture, fashion and performances revealing the range of her work. There’s plenty here for anyone who knows the dots but little of the artist behind them.
Amsterdam is the final stop on the exhibition’s European tour, following Basel and Cologne. Alongside familiar works are pieces never previously shown in Europe and new creations made for the exhibition. It runs until 17 January 2027, giving an autumn visit a substantial museum date. Book through the Stedelijk and allow time for the whole show.
