There’s a miniature Mount Fuji in the grounds of Fanhams Hall. This country house hotel in Ware, Hertfordshire, has a Japanese garden designed in the early 1900s by Mr Inaka and Professor Suzuki. Soil excavated for its ornamental lakes became the mountain. Beyond the formal gardens, a wisteria walkway leads towards Japanese maples and an original tea house.
Look for the red Shinkyo bridge crossing a fox-shaped lake, then the Austrian house imported from the Paris Exhibition of 1900. These are good reasons to bring walking shoes when booking a stay: the garden has as much to discover as the house. Allow an afternoon to explore, with dinner at Drawing Room afterwards.
